ACCOUNTINGPOSTS“Fiscal Holiday in Turkiye”: The Most Misunderstood Vacation in Accounting

Hello everyone, We’ve reached that time of the year again. July 1st… And once more, the same message starts appearing everywhere — on social media, in news feeds, and even in client messages:

“So you guys are going on holiday now, right? The fiscal holiday has started.”

If only it were that simple.

According to the circular published by ISMMMO, the fiscal holiday (mali tatil) this year starts on July 1, 2026, and ends on July 20, 2026.

To someone hearing it for the first time, it sounds wonderful. “Fiscal holiday…” even the name feels peaceful. It sounds like we close the accounting software, silence the phone, forget the inbox, lock the computer in a drawer, and head to the seaside with our families.

But real life works a little differently. Or rather… completely the opposite.

In essence, the fiscal holiday is a legal arrangement that postpones certain deadlines in tax and social security procedures. Some tax filings are deferred. Some legal deadlines are paused. Some reconciliation applications are pushed forward. On paper, it looks quite reasonable. But in our profession, its real translation is this:

“Postpone today’s work… and double it tomorrow.”

So the workload does not decrease. It simply accumulates in a corner, waiting. And then July 20 arrives… Suddenly, everything that has been waiting quietly turns into a coordinated attack.

July 27… July 28… deadlines everywhere. Phones ringing. Emails exploding.

  • “Is our tax return ready?”
  • “Has the SGK filing been sent?”
  • “When will the payment be made?”
  • “We’ll handle it today, right?”

Of course we will. Because accountants are often perceived as a species that does not require sleep or rest.

Let’s assume a miracle happens. You managed to clear the workload. Your family is ready. The luggage is in the trunk. Your car is waiting outside.

The road is set — Fethiye, maybe.
Light rain on the windshield.
Barış Manço on the radio… maybe “Gülpembe”.
Or Cem Karaca’s “Resimdeki Gözyaşları”.

Life feels perfect. And then your brain’s “accounting department” suddenly goes back to work.

“Wait a second…”
“Excise tax wasn’t included in the fiscal holiday.”
“Special communication tax is excluded too.”
“VAT from enforcement sales is still due.”

At that moment, the music quietly fades. The scenery loses meaning. Your hands are still on the steering wheel, but your mind has already returned to the office.

The most “fun” part of the fiscal holiday is the exceptions.

Yes, there is a holiday — but:

  • Workplace accidents? Still reported.
  • Occupational diseases? Still active.
  • Certain declarations? Still required.

“You can rest… but don’t relax too much.”

If a deadline coincides with the fiscal or judicial holiday, it gets extended. Sounds great — theoretically. But your internal countdown never stops. Even while grilling at the seaside, a small voice whispers:

“What was the deadline for that file?”

In other professions, when people close their laptops, work is over. In accounting, it doesn’t work that way. You’re in a grocery store choosing tomatoes and suddenly remember:

“Did I submit the withholding tax return?”

It’s 2:00 AM. You wake up from sleep. Why? Because in your dream, a VAT reconciliation was missing. Your phone rings. Unknown number. Your first thought:

“Someone is definitely asking about a tax filing.”

And you’re usually right.

Honestly, the closest thing to a vacation in this profession is:

The 45 seconds after clicking “Submit”.

Then a new cycle begins. New documents. New regulations. New communiqués. New deadline extensions. And the marathon continues.

The term “fiscal holiday” sounds beautiful. But in our profession, it often means:

“Delay stress, increase workload, and then try to handle everything at once.”

Still… maybe there is hope. Maybe we can silence the phone a little more often. Maybe we can spend a few extra hours with our families. Maybe — just maybe — we can have half an hour in vacation mode without thinking about VAT. To all my fellow professionals: I wish you patience, ease, and at least a few days where you can truly rest.

May your fiscal holiday bring real rest, error-free filings, and clients thoughtful enough to say:
“I won’t bother you… you’re on holiday.”

Now that would truly make history.
